my friend told me that jerry rice would beat me in a 5k race. Has anyone ever seen any races that jerry has run or seen any results? I have a 1000 dollar bet with me friend that he doesnt run faster than me. Please help with this I cant find it anywhere.

About 10 years ago a coworker said Michael Jordan could beat me in a 5K.... I said no F****n way! I was never able to convince him that it just wouldn't happen. I guess "they" think if he's that good/great at bball he must be able to run fast.....
Come on, little old 30-something white middle-class male couldn't possibly outrun the great MJ in a little old 5K!?!?!?!?!

I'm not saying he can or cannot beat you, but I remember reading an article in SI which talked about Jerry Rice's offseason training routine. Part of it was to do this 3 mile uphill run and apparently he was very good at it and no other NFL player that trained with him could come close.
Don't know how this translates into real running, if I had to guess, I'd say he could run a 17 minute 5K which is very good by NFL standards.
He's nasty on 200's but I don't think he could even pull 17...maybe 18. I saw his kids run (I think 400m) back in the day and they didn't have the greatest endurance, meaning any endurance he has is from work. 3 miles once in a while doesn't get you a 17 minute 5k if you're not gifted.
I killed Doug Flutie in a 5K and I'm a front end but definitely still a midpacker.

A football player like Rice is one thing, but I wonder what Michael Jordan could have done for a 5k. I know the Bulls worked hard on conditioning and Basketball does take a lot of endurance. I don't think he would be very fast but I think he would have suprised some of us.

I think he would have a hard time breaking 20 minutes.
I think that an athlete like Rice or Jordan, one with so much explosive speed, is not going to be a good distance runner. The constant short sprints of football or basketball, while requiring endurance, are very different from a continuous 5K run. They could probably put together a solid 800 or mile, but 5K might be too far.
was it rice that claimed he ran 15 miles a day (or somethin) before school..IN HIGH SCHOOL. he said something like...'yeah, 8 times around my block' that's a pretty big block!
a lot of those athletes sound like the milatary men who claim to have run 2 miles in 7 minutes with boots and a backpack.
I heard from a friend who has a cousin's sister brother-in-law's roommmates father uncle's daughter guy she dated timed Rice in a 5k on a track with a stop watch and he ran it in 13:16.

Yeah, I remember the same story. In it he also claimed to do 10 mile runs (yes, you read that correctly) routinely after football practice in jr. high + high school. I'm not saying he's a liar, but he may have been confused about actual distance in each case.
at best high 16s id say for any other basketball football player etc........those sports still require a specific type of fitness....but i dont think it would be unrealistc for them to run high16 thigh 17
