My team was having some kind of debate regarding the amount of talent needed for having a decent, but not great, mile time (5:30). Our coach said that if you randomly select several high school freshman boys who:
1.) Aren't disabled
2.) Aren't obese
3.) Are enthusiastic about running
4.) Are of the appropriate age (14)
then more than half of them could run a 5:30 mile by their senior year even if they had no previous track background, did little speedwork, and limited their mileage to 15-20MPW. More than half of the guys on the team barely run under 6 for the mile, and the coach says it's not because people aren't talented enough for it, but because people don't have the right attitude toward running.
I tend to agree with him, but most of my teammates disagreed, and said that running a 5:30 mile off of 15-20MPW requires talent that the average person just doesn't have.
What's everyone else's opinion?
