Hey, I was wondering what a good time is for a middle schooler to run the mile in. During gym class a few days ago I ran a 4:45, and I was wondering what you guys thought I could do during track this spring. I'm in 7th grade and I started XC this year.

troll, or a true middle schooler trying to impress the running community without any idea of how fast that is for a 12 year old. I'm going with the latter. This is kind of like a colleauge at work trying to tell everyone how he ran a 3:36 mile in high school without the knowledge this is much faster than the world record, much less a high school record.
I'm not lying... I'm 99% sure that's what Mr. Henderson said
or it was a PE mile that was not on a track simply a coarse jogged out by the gym teacher who also has little knowledge of running and simply estimated that it was a mile.
That said it is not a rediculous time I went 4:54 as an 8th grader, I had a winter of base training with Mead High School though. The guy that beat me in the city championships went 4:48 he won state as a soph a couple years later.
That said we were both 8th graders who had been training with the high school programs that we wouild feen into the next year. But we also were not the most talented guys ever, it is possible a 7th grader ran 4:45 but unlikely.
If you ran that fast good for you it is a great time for a 7th grader, keep training and get ready for a great track season

Not saying that these are records by any means, but just noticing that you would of won the national championship race by around 20 seconds. If you are sure this is what your coach told ya, than the course was probably pretty short. Go to your local high school track and do it again, unless you live in colorado, in that case find an indoor track. Report back immediately after.
4:45 as a 7th grader is quite possible. I coached a kid who ran 4:40 as a 7th grader then 4:28 as an 8th grader. He went on to hold the HS SR in the 2 mile (9:04), then to Stanford where he finished 2nd in the 10K at the NCAAs running 28:00 and change - name of Jason Balkman.
Did Jason come anywhere near 4:45 in a gym class **without training**?

About as good of a lie as a cop in his 20's who when I asked him if he could catch me if I ran said yes. 4.4 40 22.5, 49, and 1:54 for me in high school. This was in my first year of college this happened (sophmore now). He said he ran a 4.3 in highschool and a 4:20 mile when he was in 8th grade. I laughed out loud at him and told him he was full of shit then took off running.

That's terrible. I ran 3:41 in trainers, but I don't go bragging about it. Anyway I quit track because I thought it was wrong to run for the glory of it.
In 8th grade Balkman did train, don't know about 7th grade - I'll ask him and let you know. His level of training in HS was 30-35 a week his frosh year and he got up to 40-50 a week his senior year. In 8th grade he was < 25 a week - I just don't know about 7th.
