Do elite runners that concentrate mainly on the 5000m or 10000m lift weights?? I know alot of milers do (webb, lunn, el g, etc.), but what about 5K and 10K guys??

Name the one time world marathon record holder who said "If you are training properly you should be too tired to lift weights."
I dont know, thats why I posted the question on the board.

Meb definitely does, but it all depends on the runner. Some can lift weights a lot and just get stronger, but some tend to bulk up pretty quick. Weights are a good way to strengthen tendons and ligaments, to prevent injury, and to tone muscles, but in the end it always comes down to the running.
Yes....Once you have done your 140 mile weeks for 3 months. Please do not ask before that is taken care of.
Wasn't Said Ouita(sp?) the first to publicly advocate weights as a 5000/10000 guy who also was spectacular in the 800/1500? Maybe they were more for his 800/1500 racing, but they seemed to not have hurt him. I can't remember where, but I seem to remember him saying in an interview that he did weights.
As long as you don't bulk up, and a runner shouldn't, how can getting stronger be bad for a runner?
Yeah the 140 mile weeks would do you a lot more good, if you can stand being tired and hungry all of the time and not get injured. More muscle fiber means more oxygen. All runners could benefit from some lifting..just watch the bulk.
Weights could be helpful in injury prevention
geb said he lifts weights but very high reps and low weight and he said protein is bad for runners and he eats very high amounts of carbs. it was on one of those fan websites, cant remember exactly where i saw it.

You can lift all day and not gain muscle mass if you restrict protein intake...of course your muscles would be jello..:)
Geb has it right, high reps/low weight will NOT bulk you up. Even a short 8-12 week program of high weight/low rep won't bulk you up because all of the gains will be neuromuscular. Of course, who has the time or energy to lift once you're running 100-150 miles a week?

Yes, lifting might make you stronger and I'm sure it has other benefits. But the question we should be asking is does it actually make you run faster? I haven't seen much evidence that it does.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
