Is indoor really necessary? I prefer base building, with threshold work through out the winter. A race now and then is ok, but heck our xc season just ended and teams are already racing. What do you think?

indoor is only what 3-4 races?
theres nothing wrong with that. if anything, it only prepares you more for outdoor.
It depends on what your goals are. Me, I love indoor. At my school it is more competitive than spring track. If you are aiming for a big spring though, it may make sense to base train during the winter months.
Indoor track is exactly as you described. Base building, some threshold workouts and a race now and then. You shouldnt be having ur kids taper and do speed workouts for indoor confrenece.
Your original question, is indoor necessary, not really, but I like it because it gives me a chance to get a feel for track distances again, with out worrying about how well I do.
