I hope he runs a great race. He's obviously better at the longer distances, although this is a distance he's probably never raced before, or at least not seriously race it. I predict he'll finish 8 - 10 min. behind Gebreselassie.

I always rememebered this race as one you had to qualify with a 2:12. Therefore he shouldn't be running unless that's his goal. He's obviously cabably of it, unless he goes out in 1:04. Its his first marathon.
The key is can he run smart or let the easy 4:50 pace sucker him into going for it on his first shot. That's the gamble and the difference from running an amazing debut or limping in at 2:20. And going all the way to Japan to run 2:20.
Its a 2 hour tempo run and then its something totally different.
What rock you just climb out of? 8 -10 minutes after Gebreselassie?

Try sobriety and see how it works out.

Billy its Friday night, cut me some slack!
I think he will run 2:12-2:13. Which is a good time for his first major marathon.

Remenber that Fukuoka is not NY, its quite a diffrent course-very flat and you dont have all the turns they hve in NY. So to say he's better than Ritz is a long strech. Look at how many people ran poorly in NY.He's very economical so he should do well if he's healthy.

Sorry if it's off-topic, but I'm constantly amazed that not more people run Fukuoka. That must be a great experience - such a small field, great course, lots of spectators.
It's not that hard to get in. 2:27 for the A standard and 2:45 for the B standard (recently relaxed). It doesn't mention any restrictions, and there's, what, 1000 US men who run sub-2:45 each year and presumably several thousand Europeans.
Is there something wrong with this race that I'm not aware of. Is Fukuoka the Milwaukee of Japan, is that why nobody goes?
Americans don't like to travel beyond their borders.
OK fine, but Europeans do. So what's wrong with Fukuoka. Wrong time of year perhaps?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
Des Linden: "The entire sport" has changed since she first started running Boston.
