What is the best way to recover from a hard session, an ice bath or a massage. I've heard about having an ice bath then jumping in a hot shower afterwards. Also what aboutlying on your back with your legs raised. Anybody have any views?

The most immediate (and inexpensive) recovery is the ice. Elevation helps, but not as much. Light massage can help if available. Intense massage is most helpful after 24-48 hours (when muscles have peaked in tension).
Ice baths are great, but unless you have ready access to a training room, are somewhat time- and effort-prohibitive. I save them for after more strenuous workouts.
I recall reading that Bill Squires used to have the GBTC guys lay down w/ their feet raised on a chair or bench (a car bumper works well too) for about 5 minutes after their runs, to help the blood return from their legs. Not sure if it works, but it sure feels good.
I used to do the legs-up thing between track event when I'd double or triple without much time in between. It feels good, and I never had trouble coming back and PRing in later events. Give it a try!
