It seems like Michigan may have peaked at Big Tens. It is very hard to tell because Michigan runs so well early in the season, it is hard to tell if they are more talented, or if they are burning that candle bright from the first week in September.
Another thing to consider is there really is no race like Nationals--not even pre-nats (because it's split). You have all that pressure, and hundreds of legs thundering all around you--it takes considerable composure and concentration to run your own race, not get boxed, spiked, tripped, shoved, whathaveyou. There were higher expectations for Erin Webster and Aly Kohlmeier, but they did take third! [I'm a MSU fan] However, if those two would have run better (both 20th or better) Michigan would have stolen the National Championship from a heavy, heavy favorite.
The Michigan women do seem to have a tremendous team concept--they are almost one mind out there--in races, in training, in the locker room--and everyone will be back next year.
I am a little disappointed with Michigan State. They have come a long way--which is great--but they could have finished higher. I don't see why they couldn't run with the Illini. They'll lose Michelle Rafferty and Katie Kelly. I can't help but think that Nicole Bush can be better than she is. She should not be a minute behind Alissa McKaig.
Next year the Spartans will need two women to step up considerably to close that gap in their 1-5 spread.
Hooray for Cassie Hunt (Illinois). I can only imagine what kind of year it has been for her. I'm cheering for her the whole way.
