My chem professor gave us an assignment today that is about 3 weeks long. He gave us an iron nail and we have make it form as much rust as possible in the time given using whatever methods we want. The rustiest nail wins. Anyone have any ideas that would increase rust formation?
You could scrape the rust off of someting else and glue it onto your nail.

WD-40. Just apply it everyday for about 19 days. You won't see any rust but the last two days when you stop putting it on -- man, it's gonna grow like crazy.

Go buy a box of nails just like it and try as many things as you can. Hand in the most rusty.
yup get out the chem rx's and figure out what will oxidize that Fe the quickest. the oxidation tables will help you too...but like it was said before, salt water and O2 do a good job and are cheap

Firstly, you need an oxidizer. So, go to the grocrery store and get some. Or, got o the stockroom and see if they have any persulfates or peroxides. Then you have to increase the surface area of the nail. That means that you grind it into powder. Then soak it in the oxidizer for the duration of the test. You should beat anyone who just tries to oxidize the outside of the nail.

Also, a little creativity with electricity can also make your nail the "rustiest." Hint: Does the nail have to look the rustiest or just have the most chemical rust?
