I work at a school with a pretty good track program. It's mostly a sprinter based program though, without much in way of distance runners. It's about 99% black, which I think is used as a crutch for the failures of XC. The girls have a very good 4x400 and the guys had two guys under 2:00 for 800m from last year that are back. Yet both the guys and girls stink at XC.
The guys were nearly last at the county meet with one guy at 18:30 or so for 5k and another a minute behind him. Third man was over 21:30. Fourth man was close to 24 minutes and the 5th guy was a few steps under 24 himself. The course wasn't too bad and the 3rd place team averaged right around 18:20 for their top 5, perhaps slower. The 5th team in the county only had two guys under 20 minutes and their 5th was over 21 minutes. This isn't a podunk county either, it's got over 100,000 students k-12, teams just don't value XC very much.
The girls weren't any better. At the county meet only one girl in the entire meet ran under 20:30 (and she was actually under 18 minutes). The school I'm at was 7th out of 9 teams. Their best girl ran 23 and a half minutes for 5k, second was over 24, third was near 26, fourth was a step under 26 and fifth was over 27 and a half minutes. Third place in the county averaged around 22 minutes and change.
This school has over 2,000 students and a lot of good athletes. Last year I worked at another school 1/3 of the size and the guys averaged about 18:15 for 5k (which would have won in the county I'm at now by a lot) and the girls averaged around 24 minutes, which is not good, but only 5 girls came out.
I talked to the XC coach before the season began and told her I'd like to help, but she didn't seem very interested at all. Several of her athletes have told me she doesn't push them in practice at all. The team races every Tuesday after school at a bootleg meet in which girls can walk and still win races. They run 3 miles a day unsupervised and then a couple sprints.
Anyone come into a situation like this? No one at the school takes XC seriously and it's sad b/c the school could be decent if they wanted to be.
