Any help would be appreciated here...
I have a senior male, has run xc / track since 7th grade, but I've only worked with him since 11th grade.
PR's: 56.4 / 2:04 / 4:40 / 10:04 / 16:40
Bottom line is the athlete PR's early season, then makes a steady decline in performance throughout the season. Races are typically the same...runs his best when we hold him back over the first 2/3 of the race and let him roll the last part. When he goes out hard (5k) ~5:05, he gets to the 2 mile around 10:20 - 10:30, then just completely falls apart in the last mile.
Based on workouts over the summer, I felt he should have been mid to low 16's by the end of the season fairly easily compared to athletes in the past. He was running workouts at our camp similar to an athlete I had who was high 15's. Instead his season ended with a string of low 17's. This has been a typical result in every season he's run.
My initial reaction was (a) he didn't carry his off season mileage into the season or (b) he did way too many easy runs at an aggressive pace in the off seasons. In going through his log and mine, I have not found this to be true. Most recovery runs and 2nd runs this past summer were in the 6:45 - 8:00 range / mile, with 90% of them being 7:15 - 7:30 pace. We did not significantly drop mileage from the summer until early October.
Summer milage built from 35 (late May) to a peak week of 65, with several 55 weeks during the summer. Mileage during the season once school started (mid August) was around 40 - 50. Last three weeks were 35, 35, 30 when we tapered off for state.
Typical summer week:
Mon - speed (10 x 100m) aka Irv Ray
Tue - easy
Wed - fartlek (3 x 5 min on) or step down run with last 2 miles hard
Thur - easy
Fri - long (10 - 13)
Sat - easy
Sun - easy
2nd runs on their own 3 - 4 miles
Total volume: 35 - 65 depending on the week
As the season progresses we add hills and long intervals (1k - 1600m) early, eliminating the hill work by mid Sept. and shortening the intervals as the season progresses.
No interval work the weeks of two meets (Tues / Sat), otherwise never more than 3 hard days in the week, and typically only 2 counting a race as a hard day.
Anyone else had a kid that just petered out early, but otherwise was doing everything you asked? Diet, rest, etc., are not concerns here. That being said, I was told at the end of the season that he'd go to bed early (9 or 10) and not fall asleep until 2, but wake up around 6...so at some point recovery became an issue because of the lack of rest.
Any ideas on how to structure the spring?
It just seems like as soon as the meets hit, he begins the downward spiral.
