I'm guessing any runners who are of Islamic faith
This is possibly the best way to both improve your detoxification and your running performance. By running without fuel, your body will adjust to doing just that. Once your body has fuel again, it will be able to use it more efficiently.
ask mohammad trafeh about his post season while at california high school Duarte. it seems he did alright.
1)I wouldn't call Ramadan a fast as it is just about 12h without eating a day, it's actually very unhealthy, you should eat when the sun is up and stop when it goes down because of the hormonal/recovery process but Mohammed was a prophet and not a doctor..
2)As someone already posted, you SHOULD do some easy running when you fast to activate the organism, but don't hammer.
3)You really have to clear your digestive system before starting a fast or you might get into trouble, drink something that makes you sh.. like mad.
If you stop taking in food your digestive system doesn't get the ingredients that helps it to digest and it will be difficult to pocess the stuff that you have eaten the last couple of days, that is what can fasting make so hard in the beginning, can lead to headaches, tiredness and other side-effects.
I think Hicham el Guerrouj used to fast (in terms of sun up/sun down - Ramadan).
I fasted one time for spiritual reasons (I'm a Christian, not a Muslim so it wasn't Ramadan). I did 11 days of nothing but liquids. So, I was getting some calories in, but not much. I found that I could do about 4 miles a day pretty easy. I didn't push it beyond that, as I wasn't seriously training at that point and was just seeing what I could do comfortably. The first few days, you might not feel to good, so you might not want to run. If you do it, I'd take it easy for a few days and then just see what you could handle. I would think that any runs in the neighborhood of 8+ would be begging for trouble.

HAS ANYONE EVER USED THE SEARCH FEATURE?
This year, my friend fasted for Yom-Kippur and then ran a 5 second PR the next day.
see the aly kohlmeier thread... gotta be some fasting happening there....
I've heard that drinking lemon water is supposed to be good while fasting?
I've also heard that training while fasting is probably not a great idea, and to drink pure oj...
I'm thinking of trying one myself... havn't raced in 3 years due to injury and gotten abit chunky.. about 20lbs off race weight... just worried I might be too tired to function properly for school tho.
this is one I'm thinking of trying... scroll down til you hit the paragraph "faster with fasting"

Maybe it would have been a 20 second PR without the fasting.
I raced the day after Yom Kippur a couple times. I never really ran well, although I also feel sluggish after taking a day off in general, so that could have been a factor.
Some Latter Day Saints fast, ask anyone who is LDS.

Even though he did PR, Im pretty sure that it was due to the fact that he didnt run the day before. Had he ate and not run, yes, maybe it would have been a 20 second PR

Yeah. Having run after fasting all day, I can tell you it's not the easiest thing.
I'm a Muslim. I ran this Ramadan (late September to late October) while fasting. If you go slowly enough in the early days, you'll get the hang of it later on. I ran a great 10k race towards the end of the month while fasting, mercifully on a cool day. My last workout while fasting was a gutbusting progression run after 12 hours of not eating or drinking.
The key is to be able to dissociate yourself from food for hours at a time. Once you do that, you can do things as you normally would, though it makes sense to reduce volume.
I'm not sure what you're trying to do, whether you'll be eating or drinking or how long this will last. You can get by okay for a few days, I find, without eating or drinking much. Afterwards, it gets tougher and you really have to slow down and back off.
I fart all the time when I run. Sometimes its that sweet kind of fart that lets loose with every step you take, kind of like a machine gun.
When I worked in Club Med I worked with a Morrocan that fasted and he did land sports with me which involved running, Volleyball, Soccer, moving bleachers etc. The Guy passed out right it front of me during just walking through the lobby. I don't suggest fasting and running!
I used to start out (fast and SLOW) during my races.
Has anyone ever done that?
