I played basketball in 8th grade, and our coach was this huge conditioning fanatic because we pressed like crazy and played up-tempo (we averaged almost 60 points per game -- 24 minute games). Every day at practice we had to run a mile in under 6:00 and if you didn't you had to run suicides after practice. That was of course on top of the suicides (at least 10) and sprints we had to run at the end of practice. It was insane, but we were all in the best shape of our lives.
Remember the President's Fitness Test? We did that right after the basketball season, and just about every guy on the team ran the 600 in under 1:40 -- and the fastest was at 1:29. I think the 100th percentile at the time was like 1:50 or something. Too bad our school didn't have a track team.
