I notice this and wonder why. I own a compact car because they're cheaper, better gas mileage, and I like manuals.

I drive a hummer. I usually tow a boat just for good measure. If it don't smoke... you must be broke!!!
I like a car that is light (<2500lbs), RWD, and has a manual transmission. The improvement in driving dynamics and level of driver involvement one gets from a small, sporty car is worth the inconvenience of less space. The vast majority of "mid-size" cars today weight in excess of 3500lbs, filled with all manner of useless gizmos, are FWD, and automatic. Most will soon have traction control, electronic stability assistance, and whatever other electronic nannies the government mandates.
Cars that I would like to own:
1. Lotus Elise/Exige
2. Air cooled Porsche (pre-993 911's)
3. Mazda Miata & FD RX-7
4. BMW E30 M3 (or plastic bumper 318is, 325is)
5. Air cooled VW bug (+ good wheels, tires, suspension)
6. Most VW GTI's (FWD I know, but still pretty good)
7. Any of the earlier rally homologation specials (Lancia Delta Integrale, 323 GTX, EVOs, etc...)
No help here. I drive a F150 crew cab 4x4 with leather seats. Wife drives an expedition to haul the 3 kids and pets, plus it pulls the boat well. I run 60 miles a week.
Small runners = small penisis = small cars
I drive a 1989 Mercedes-Benz 260E. She's got character.
2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Extended Cab 4x4 and a 2005 Ford Taurus-not really small cars in our household.

Ah yes, the Napoleon complex... small of stature, both vertically and horizontally.
I think that only works if the small car in question is Porsche or Ferrari (surrogate penis). Otherwise its the large vehicles like Hummers, Expeditions, and dually/sixpack trucks that denote lack of manhood.
Typically (but not always) small cars cost less. On average runners make less money than non runners. People who make real money play golf and drive bigger cars.
Are there runners who make lots of money? YES.
Are there golfers who don't make that much? YES.
Are both extreme examples? YES.
mid-engined roadster. for the almost unbeatable handling and agility. like me on a xc-course(just kidding).

Dont forget vehicles like Toyota Sequoia and Toyota Land Cruiser- also a compensation thing thrown in with a little arrogance.
2005 Toyota Corolla CE: automatic, a/c, crank windows, 4 door.
It got 42MPG on my last long trip and gets consistent
33-35mpw commuting to work every day.
Reliable, sturdy little pony. My last one got 120K miles before two consecutive hits by pickup truck drivers both of whom claimed they "did not see" me. That car was WHITE, both times it was sunny cloudless days.
I hate big pickup trucks.
This car is a burgundy red, let's see if the dumb b*stards can see THIS one.
Did I mention that I hate big pickup trucks?
For me, a small car because I live in a big city and can park where most people cannot, which makes my life a lot easier. Also, the cost of running it is SO low.
Statistics please?Or are you just spouting off again?

Hey walter, Spouting off is what matters most here. Besides statistics can be used to support just about anything, while proving absolutely nothing.
Manual 2000 Nissan Pathfinder....not large but certainly not compact.
Scion xB 5-speed.
I didn't get it because it was a good, small, fun, cheap, high-mpg car. I got it because it was the only car in which I don't need to remove my stovepipe hat to drive.
I drive a large truck, because if I ever get the chance to run over Flagpole, I want to make it count.
It's true. They taught us in econometrics that statistics can't prove anything, rather show probabilities. On second thought don't take my word for it, because my professor was a large German woman who would pronounce "yeah" like "yah!"

Now THAT'S pretty funny brother.
