I have been told to replace my shoes every 500 miles, but this seems a little excessive seeming as though it would have me in new shoes every month and a half. What does everyone think? I get free shoes so it's not a financial issue. I just don't want to be wasteful (but I suppose I also don't want to foolishly risk injury).
They should be replaced every 3 weeks or 20 miles, whichever comes first.
The 3 week rule applies to shoes that never leave the box as well.

I went through 3 pairs training for my last marathon.
I think 600 Miles/per is fine- 700 is pushing it.
I wear the heavy duty NB/990's.
I usually put 500-600 miles on a pair of shoes. About that time my ankles start to get a little stiff from time to time, as do my knees. Nothing bad, but it always reminds me to make sure I get my hands on some new shoes. Also probably depends on what surfaces you are running on, how much you weigh, your stride, etc. If you are running 100 miles a week on concrete, replacing your shoes is probably a good idea. If you are running 100 miles a week on grass, you probably dont have to worry about it as much.
Surely you can run 1000 miles plus in a pair of Puma H streets or Brooks T4 racers if you believe all the minimalist rubbish on here!
Seriously though, 5-600 miles. Some people go through them a lot, lot quicker though!
I think a lot depends on the shoe, your weight, running surface...
I tend to 7-800 miles. Some more, some less.
After about 500 miles I pay closer attention to the shoes and when I notice changes in the shoes or I begin to have problems with my knees/legs I buy a new pair.
Running surface makes a huge difference. Spring-Fall, running mostly on trails, I can get 800+. Winter, running on road and sidewalk, I'm lucky to get much above 400.
As everyone stated here it depends on the shoe, your weight and running style and of course what you run on. I usually only get 300-400. Might be alittle on the low end but I'd rather get a new shoe sooner then later and not feel the aches and pains others have mentioned.
Running surface, weight and efficiency will determine the life of the shoe. Since I'm no longer getting in college getting free shoes, I'm always guilty of milking shoes for all they are worth. Right now, I'm training in a pair of Streak XC's with about 600 miles on them. I have a brand new pair, tried them for a short run and didn't like their feel compared to the "worn in" ones. My experience is that if you improve your mechanics, you'll gradually increase the life of your shoes.
depends solely on the person and the shoe. Some shoes I get 700-800 without problem. Others i get 400-500.
Find out what works for you. When your legs start breaking down, without a real change in mileage or workouts, its a pretty good sign your shoes should be dumped

The shoe companies obviously don't want them to last too long. When I first started running (1984) I could get 900 miles on the outsoles on every pair of the original Nike Air Pegasus running shoes I bought for $40 retail. Since about 1995, I've been lucky if I get 400 miles on any shoe. The shoe companies are into gimmicks and bright colors and low mileage and making enough money off of all of us to make them rich, pay the NBA, NFL, and other athletes big bucks, all the while they pay pennies to people in the near slave-like sweatshops of Malaysia, Korea, Taiwan, and other countries. And we all just put up with their crap, because we have no real options other than to run barefoot or in Crocs. Sad.
3,100 miles on my last pair of Hokas. Currently around 800 miles on this pair.
