This guy would say hi to me and strike up random conversations. He'd usually be on his bike. Being the nice person I am I just said hi and chated for a few seconds.
But then when I was out running he started to run along side me. I usually run alone. I am not interested in him. It was terrible too because he runs SLOWER THEN ME!!! It was awful...I had to slow down to not be rude! He messed up my run!!!!
How should I get rid of him the next time he tries to run with me?
Hammer the pace until you drop him and then keep hammering... That way he'll be totally embarassed and won't approach you again.
I'm going to assume your post is legit.
The obvious answer is don't slow down.
You might change up your route/time of run if you have a regular pattern. If this guy is some kind of creep, he might be waiting for you. Best to play it safe.
I guess I did not want to be rude, guess I'll just pick up the pace if he tries to run with me.
But is there an unspoken rule out there if a person had headphones and an iPod on that you should just wave and not interrupt their run?
You might try ignoring him and as the others said run your usual pace. Don't try and be considerate, unless you want to send the wrong signal. Try hawking out a couple of good loogies to discourage the poor sap.[quote]Running Girrrrl wrote:

Bingo. Some guys don't understand unless you make it CRYSTAL clear to them that you're not interested. I wouldn't even say "Hi" to the guy. Completely ignore him and then drop the pace so he can't keep up with you. If he tries to talk to you on a subsequent day, he's a problem and you need to tell him that you are not interested in him and that you want to be LEFT ALONE. If he still tries to talk to you, it's time to involve law enforcement. I'm not kidding... there are some real weirdos out there.
Some times in life you have to be rude in the short term in order to be polite in the long term.

No reason to be rude. Just be very clear and very firm. Very clear and very firm. End the conversation after you've done this.
Say this " I prefer to run alone and yes you can take that personally"

Women in general aren't capable of being direct. Well, maybe that's a bit harsh, but in general it seems they have been socialized to communicate through elaborate hint dropping schemes and hope your dumb ass will be able to figure it out. This is apparently much easier than just saying what they feel or want.
example:
Girlfriend: are you hungry?
(translation: I'm hungry let's go eat).
Me: no, I'm o.k. right now.
(translation: no, I'm o.k. right now.)
30 minutes later
Girlfriend: soooo, are you hungry yet?
(translation: if you don't feed me immediately I'm going to turn into a raging bitch)
Me: "yeah, I'm gettin' there, let me just finish this"
(translation: yeah, I'm gettin' there, let me just finish this)
Girlfriend: ok (heavy sigh)
(translation: I f***ing hate you, you selfish insensitive jerk. God I'm so hungry!!)
This is a little ridiculous, don't you think? Some guy who you don't seem to know is annoying you on a run yet you think you have to be polite to him and slow down to run with him. Why on earth would you think that? What makes you think you need to be a doormat, for goodness' sake? Even if it were rude to not slow down (which it is not), what the heck do you care?
If more needs to be said, inn this (or any) guy's mind, being nice = expressing intest in him. You're not doing him any favors by letting him run with you and having a conversation with him.
If you have a hard time being direct, maybe just run faster than him and eventually separate yourself from him (acting as if you don't really notice you've left him in your dust b/c you're "in the zone"). Then when you finish, and he comes running in at the trail head, or wherever you run, just casually say "Oh, sorry about that, but I usually just run alone and kind of got in the zone." If he does not get the hint at this point and tries it again, you will have to be direct, I'm afraid. Even still, there's a way to convey this without being rude - "I prefer running solo b/c it's the only time I really have to myself."

Ok, I would have thought your post was legit if it weren't for that statement. Nobody in their right mind (male or female) who is serious about their training would purposely slow down to run with someone they are trying to get rid of.

Space Lord, maybe those are things that you would say to an acquaintance that you didn't want to run with. Why do you owe a stranger an explanation at all?
How do you guys deal with people who want to wash your windshield? What do you say to telephone solicitors? Do you respond to junk mail? Do you add spammers to your contacts list?

While I can't see slowing down to run with an annoying guy that you don't even know, I do understand how you feel about being polite. What I would do if he were to try running with you again is to politely say hello and keep on with your run. If it appears that he is trying to run with you and he can't keep up and that makes you feel weird (or if he asks you to slow down), then I would just tell him that you don't want to seem rude, but since you're in training (for whatever it is you're training for) you need to keep running your pace to get the most out of your run. (or something along those lines) I would also warn you to be careful though b/c guys can be creeps. I've gotten to the point that when guys whistle or yell stuff at me, it actually pisses me off b/c of some of the encounters I've had with creeps. I also really like the idea of just dropping him b/c it never gets old dropping a guy....especially when they try holding you off! But seriously, be careful.
