Alright, here's the deal. My roommate is a crew recruit at my school, and is very interested in the training I do as a runner (high volume, low intensity for base period). As I understand from talking to friends at various New England private schools, crew training is still in the dark ages (sorry if I'm offending anyone, don't mean to).
In any case, would the kind of base training done in running work for someone racing 5000m on the water? As I see it, it's basically a 5000m race with your arms. Most high school rowers train by doing intervals, or a hard 20 minute row, every day. Pretty scary. Would going for volume (60 "rowing" miles per week for example), and much easier intensity (say, 2:00 per 500m), produce good results once the speed training started?
I'd like to hear all your thoughts on this, I'm kind of going from the seat of my pants here.
