I just found this article. Don Thompson's story is one that we should all learn from when feeling you don't have the talent/resources etc to prepare and succeed.
Don competed in the '56 Olympics 50k walk, but dropped out due to the heat. He knew that Rome '60 would be just as hot, and was determined to acclimatize himself to the heat, despite the fact that the hottest it ever got in the UK summer was ~20 degrees.
He would heat up his bathroom to >35 degrees, boil water to raise the humidity, and then begin exercising in this environment.
He won the gold in '60, where it was hot and humid as he had predicted. He might not have been the most talented athlete that day, but he certainly was the most prepared.
