Recently I responded to a thread on David Krummancaker with regard to Jonathon Johnson. There was a comment about how rarely one sees a runner attacking the 1st 400 of a 800 or taking the pace out in mid distance races.JOHNSON SHOWED(BALLS/GUTS) last week at NATS.
I unfortuneately or(fortunately) come from the 80's days of racing.
I raced with the crazy 80's crowd in the 800...and boy were they crazy. As stated on the thread about Krums win @ 1:45...Earl Jones ran 1:43 after a 50.2 1st 400 @ the Olympic Trials in 84...and then took bronze after he and Edwin Koech (who went to Richmond) tore up the opening lap in LA...in the finals of the Oly 800.1st 200..(23.4) I think.
Cruz loved to lead and he refused to follow on most occasions..I wonder if Krum will soon be taught to do this by D'olivera
Johnny Gray in his hey day...would solo his BEST races.I once watched him solo 1:42....ouch...!!
So it was refreshing to see Johnson run like the boys of the past...Is the USA returning to glory with front running??or do we sit and kick and hope for medals??Ask PAIGE and ROBINSON of 80's fame what happened to their kicks at the 84 trials??For those too young to know...the Oly Trials 84...800 was a classic and the sitters were left sittin with 200 to go...although Robinson did run 1:43.9 for 4th...OUCH...!!TAKE IT OUT...OR SIT AND KICK...there are only 3 MEDALS...and time...(less than 1min and 44 secs.).is NOT ON YOUR SIDE..
