Summer in Boulder (5,400' average): 90-93, goes up to 100, sub-85 is cool in summer, and dry six days a week in Boulder with maybe one day of rain in June, two days of precipitation in July, and 2-3 days a week especially in mid-July through August, with more monsoonal humidity and good afternoon thunderstorms, downpours. A little better under-32 y/o nightlife than most USA college towns, not just in Colo. Pretty place, need to drive a few miles to most trailheads and jobs are hard to come by. You'll find a few bears, mountain lions foraging in Boulder in late-summer.
Summer in Gunnison (8,000'-9,000'): 78-84, goes up to low 90s, sub-72 is cool in summer, and dry on most days, somewhat windier than Boulder, a little more moisture and rain-snow too before Memorial Day and after July 15th. Summer starts later, ends earlier there and the winters are pretty harsh. Hilly terrain. Not much to do there either, but if you're into that running monk element, Gunnison and Alamosa are a little more quiet. Less organized running groups and accessability to races. Sometimes farmers get hacked off at runners running along their dirt roads near their property so watch where you run, and jobs are hard to come by there too. More bears, mountain lions (pretty common) than Boulder too.
If you go to the National Weather Service web site, they have all the info and more you need. Boulder in July avg. is 86 and low is 56. Pretty nice for July! Very dry as well. What part of country are you moving from?
ill be comin from boston. We get crazy heat waves and humidity, especially this summer.

If anything, we do not have un-organized running?
Gunnison itself is below 7800'
If you are moving out here I would worry more about the winter than the summer. Bostons cold, but it gets pretty chilly around here to.
Are you moving out here or just spending the summer? I've lived in New England & grew up in CO, the nice thing here is that the atmosphere is pretty dry, so the temperature feels less extreme. What I mean by that is that you can run when it's 100 degrees here and it's not too unpleasant, and I feel like I can run outside in the winter down to about 10 degrees (and I am NOT tough about cold weather.
That said there are far too many people in Boulder already so I think Gunnison would be a better "running retreat." There are a lot of great trails in Crested Butte which is just down the road.
Gunnison does sound nice. I'm lookin to spend this summer out there, then come back to finish up school in mass, then possibly move out there permanently.
