If you picked at random a woman from the street who had average age, height, weight and activity/fitness levels, how fast do you think she would run 400m?
2 minutes?

No, the "average" woman, is overweight and doesn't excercize. I'd say more like 3:00.
she would have to walk, so it would take her more like 4:30 for 400 meters.

You're an optimist.
Between five and seven minutes.
The "average" (American) woman is 5-4 and weighs more than 140 pounds...
Out of interest I looked up the stats for British women (I'm British) and it shocked me: the average woman here, apparently, is 5'4 and 152 lbs, and it says the mean BMI is 26.4.
Do you not think the average woman (in the West) could jog for 400m though?

This is very difficult to guess at - it's amazing the range of abilities of non-exercisers (ie, "average" around these parts). I know many girls right now in this category and know maybe 2-4 that could break 2:00, but most of them would probably quit after half a lap....seriously. Or they would walk/shuffle to 4-5:00.

You forgot she would have those hand weights and a fanny pack with a bottle of water, an i-pod and AF baseball cap with her hair in a pony tail out the back. Then at 200 meters she would take a cell phone call.
After she finished the 400 meters, she would have this overwhelming sense of accomplishment.
As I think about this post, it makes me consider the "average person" and how far gone we are, as Western culture from the basic fitness of the non-exerciser of years past. I personally am not a fan of the "running is the best indicator of our worth as a person" threads, because how fast one runs a 400 is not necessarily the best indicator of how good of "shape" they are in. I know plenty of fast people who can not move their own furniture b/c they are so meakly built it's embarrassing. What is of more concern is the fact that now a days, this "average person" we speak of can neither run fast NOR do strenuous lifting!!! Some people are really strong, but just can't run fast. Some people are really fast, but can't open a pickle jar. Some lucky individuals can do both, but what's truly sad is the growing number of people who cannot do ANYTHING physical. Not taking anything away from either the strong or fast camps...you've got to play to your strengths, but we have evolved into a culture of jello.

....and if she wasn't capable of finishing, we'd let her cut across the infield.
According to Men's health the average guy can do 27 Push ups and with this logic the average women can run 400 meters if she had to in 2 1/2 minutes or so.
Men's Health is full of prunes. The average guy can do 3-5 pushups, maybe.
My wife is pretty average, runs once in a while does some situps each morning. Not a jock at all. She can run a 400 in just under 2 minutes. I think that was only because our 8 year old had just run a 2:05 and she had to beat his time. He went out hard and blew like every 8 year old otherwise I would have bet on him.
1:45 - 2:10 would be the 1 standard deviation range.
not a chance the average guy can do 27 pushups.
that's not pretty average. that's top 5% or better by my estimation.
I remember this challenge being done by a radio show in LA, last year I think. The person would call the radio station and run with their cell phone on and tell Ryan Seacrest or whoever it was when they were finished. They had to do it under 2:00 to win some kind of prize, and I recall several girls being able to do it with time to spare. Of course, they could have been lying since no one was actually there to verrify that they really did a lap around the track, but I'd believe an average woman could do 2:00.

I fitness test people, the average male can do about 18 push-ups and can do only 21 sit-ups in 30 seconds.

I mean 21 sit-ups in 60 seconds. The average woman usually 18 if she can do them at all. Full-sit ups.
