Yes it seems obvious, but observation of the actions of elites compared with ordinary runners and sedentary people confirm the above.
An hour after the Montreal Marathon (September 10th, 2006) the top athletes and personalities convened in the VIP tent for a meal, which was buffet style (all you can eat on offer).
It was interesting to observe that the top 5 runners in the race (the winner posting a 2:20 time) only put a bit of salad, small helping of meat onto their plates, and drank water.
The other VIP's and ordinary runners piled their plates to the max and included desserts....all in all up to 2000 calories at a single sitting.
The elites ate slowly and paused after every mouthful. The non elites wolfed down the repast and then went back for more, to the amazement of the top runners, who were calm and restful in their seats.
So the elites have developed a more efficient way of processing the fuel they take in, and althoug (in theory) they may be calorie deficient, based on the extraordinary demands in takes to run 2:20 or thereabouts for the marathon, they have developed the physiology to survive with the calories they ingest, small quantities compared with the hoi polloi.
Interesting food for thought.
