I've read about these two runners who inhaled pure oxygen before their races once. Both PR'ed by a large amount (about 1.5 seconds in the 400 and 2-3 in the 800). It's in Lore of Running somewhere. Anyway, while in a HS anatomy/physiology class, we were talking about hyper ventilating. It lead to the teacher telling us that when you breath in a lot of oxygen, your blood becomes more basic, meaning there is a rise in blood pH. This is pretty similar to the story about the two runners who inhaled oxygen.
My question: have I found a legal way of doping the blood to prolong fatigue during races of 3k or shorter? Could you just take deep breaths until you start to feel a little light headed before your races? Good idea? Bad idea?
