I am looking to buy some discontinued shoes in bulk, and I was wondering if they will some how "expire" sitting around in their boxes for a few years. I have heard they do, but I have no idea why they would. Any insight?

I'm sure some materials commonly used in running shoes have a limited "lifespan" for optimal performance. A year or two in a box and I wouldn't hesitate to run in them, but much longer than that and I'd relegate then to lawn mowing and similar activities. That said, I've held on to a few pairs of racing flats for 3-4 years and raced in them. Probably not the wisest thing to do.
I don't think it's the box so much as the enviroment - temperature, humidity, light, etc. - that potentially could be damaging.
