Okay, So I have read (1) Jack Daniels Running Formula , (2) Run to Win :Training Secret of the Kenyans , (3) Alberto Salazar's Guide to Training , (4) Running Tough , (5) Steve Magness's Training Website, (5) Renato Canova Threads (6) Bob Kennedy's Training on DyeStat , and (6) Many Many Training Threads here on letsrun.com.
Kenyan (and Ethiopean) training seems not to be very periodized like Daniels, but yet many people swear by Daniels. The training of the African is certainly not easy, but is a lot less complex. They may organize their training, but not to the extent as others do. Renato Canova typed up what the base phase looks like for some of his runners and I notice some LT work (which is encourage in many training philosphies), but I also saw workouts like 4 hard, 3min easy which certainly seems like a workout intened to stimulate VO2 Max. I don't see a lot of VO2 Max work in other base phases. Then of course I see "variations" , which is segments of fast running for 45 sec-1 min then 2 minutes back to training pace. I don't see much of this either. Our American record holder Bob Kennedy certainly took the same approach. In the interviw ;
Marc Davis- When did you start what you would consider your base phase for the 1996 Summer track season?
Bob Kennedy- "I finished the 1995 track season in early September, so I took a few weeks off after that and started back running easy by the beginning of October. My volume from Oct '95 through Dec '95 would have been around 90 miles per week. We did a lot of tempo running, fartlek work, etc. In reality we combined a lot of the base and transition phases, with not a clear cut beginning or ending. So, I would say my base training went from October '95 all the way through April '96."
There is really not a distinct base phase, but he was certainly doing many miles. I also read in a Craig Mottram interview that he does VO2 Max year round and is never 6 weeks from sub 13, obviously 6 weeks of some sharpening. Is mixing training zones year around safe for non-elites? Some could help me out?
