This is what Powerbar wrote me in response to my question on why they would use HFC as the main ingredient in there Performance Bars. For you nutrition experts do you believe this is a fair and just answer or is Power Bar just trying to cut corners using a cheaper longer lasting sweetener that only does your body harm?
Also is it true that the only way to keep the bar togther with out adding fat is to use HFC and lastly is HFC really worse for you than sugar or other sweeteners?
"Thank you for contacting PowerBar(tm). PowerBar(tm) has been the leader in sports
nutrition since 1986 and we want to continue to provide you with the energy as well as
the nutritional information to be great, no matter what the challenge.
Thank you for your comments on high fructose corn syrup. This syrup is used in our
Performance(tm) bars. Our other bars contain brown rice syrup. PowerBar®
Performance(tm) bars are designed to provide easily digestible sustained energy to help
meet the needs of athletes and people on the go. To this end, we include 45 grams of a
blend of simple and complex carbohydrates and 10 grams of high quality protein to
provide both initial and sustained energy and a wide assortment of vitamins and
minerals, including 100% of the DV for the energy-releasing B vitamins. The 2 ½
grams of fat are naturally occurring from ingredients like almond butter and account for
only 10% or so of the calories in each bar.
Producing the Performance(tm) bar without having to add fat that would compromise the
intended nutritional focus of the bar represents a challenge. High fructose corn syrup
serves as both a source of simple carbohydrates that provides quick energy while also
holding the bar together without the need for added fat. Performance® bars are, thus,
water-based rather than fat-based, making them more sensitive to extremes in
temperature than bars with a higher fat content.
