I am looking for a small digital camera that i can fit in my pocket and that takes great action shots. Many digital cameras have the delay and can take some bad pictures. I was wondering what the best one is for track photography?

By an SLR, they are not cheap but you need the shutter speed.
SLR.
i have a Canon G6, like one of the closest digital cameras you can get to an SLR (cost me $650), but it doesnt take great photos of anyone running fast, specifically sprinting. it can take some great photos at road races, though, but i wouldnt use it for track photos. shutter speed is just way too slow for that. need an SLR for that, which i might just get....but not til Christmas.
here are samples, but these guys are running like 5 min pace--if they were sprinting, they'd show up as a blur.
I was looking for something pocket size do they make any SLR that way.
An SLR would definitely be the best route to go...but even an entry level model (Nikon D50, Canon EOS 350D) with a quality lens will be in the ballpark of $700-800. If you think you can afford it go for it, as an SLR will allow you to use higher ISO sensitivities, meaning you can use a super fast shutter speed but still take in enough light to properly expose the image. Not to mention their increased dynamic range and much cleaner images in terms of noise and amount of detail.
If you can't find room in the budget for an SLR, then perhaps something from the fixed lens superzoom market would work. All of the good ones have 12x (432mm) optical zoom with image stabilization, and are certainly capable of a fast shutter speed. The only thing is, due to their smaller sensors, you'll be limited to using lower ISO sensitivities because of ridiculous noise at the high end. So if you only plan on shooting bright outdoor meets, then you'll probably be fine with something like the Panasonic FZ7/FZ30, Canon S3 IS, or Sony H2/H5. These range in price from about $300 for the FZ7, to around $450 for the H5 and FZ30.
I recommend dpreview.com to get closer looks at some of these.
Nope, all SLR's are going to range from decent size to pretty big, depending on the lens attached particularly. Definitely not pocket sized though. The FZ7 is the smallest of the superzooms, and is actually quite small. It still has some decent thickness to it, so maybe not quite pocket sized.
You can look through the compact cameras on that site...I'm not terribly familiar with them but I've read and seen some good things from the Canon A620 which should qualify as pocket sized. I also believe it's relatively cheap too, around 200-250 I think.
I have been looking at the olympus stylus 720 sw. It has many other features that fit my lifestyle. I am a college student who is willing to spend about $400 on something. The features I like on this camera are the 5ft shock absorber the 7.1 mega pixels and the image stabalizing. The camera says it has a sports mode but how good are these modes?
Here is the DP review on that camera.
