The live Zidane interaction with the Italian was completely unseen by the refs. No red card until the video replay.

Apparently you have never been close to a pro football field or basketball court. things are said there that I found to be completely inflamatory and nasty, but I never saw someone get head butted about it.

there are replays, but they don't matter to the game because the refs can't see the replays, they just have to go by what they see

fifa does not allow controversial replays to be shown to the crowd in the stadium (just like in american sports stadiums); there is a rumor that the fourth and fifth officials saw the replay on the sideline tv (which apparently has a different feed than the "big screens" and that is why he was eventually sent off.
Some newspapers are reporting he called him a terrorist, or called his father a terrorist. (Zidane's parents are Algerian immigrants.) You have to wonder how that might have come up in their conversation, though...

ESPN stated that the stadium SHOWED the head butt and the analyst stated he "hoped the ref didnt look at the video because he wasnt suppose to"
However it happened, the lag between the incident and the actual red card indicates that the refs only saw it on video.
so what? still doesn't warrent Zidane's response. everyone talks trash, it's part of almost every sport out there. besides, it looked like MM was basically saying "yeah, whatever man" from his expressions and jestures. I liked Zidane until that point. Stupid move and that's what he'll be remembered for, not his gutsy play after hurting his shoulder.
