Are there many elite runners who are 6 feet or taller?
Are there many elite runners who are 6 feet or taller?
Plenty of them. Nick Rogers is 6'4, Chad Johnson 6'2, Krummenacker 6'2, Daniel Lincoln 6'3, Alan Culpepper 6'1, Paul McMullen 6'2. As you can see there are plenty of elites that are over 6 foot.
South Dakota has Tall Scott. He's 6'4", 6'9" with the afro. 2:28 marathoner; that's elite for SD. I think his favorite racer is Jeff Gordon, and that's queer anywhere. His dog bix like to eat ham and barf it up; that probably would have been a good post for the stupid high school stories thread. Tall Scott lists as his turn-ons: women that work in bread outlets.
From the past:
Jack Bacheler (sp?) 6'7"
Don Kardong 6'4" (both Olympians I think)
80's PA HS mile star (4:03?) Paul Vandegrift 6'6"
There was talk the other day on this board about a new Kenyan phenom who's 6'6" -- can't remember the name (typical American, I know). Joe LeMay's well over 6'.
Oh yea! I am 6ft1. Oh wait I am not an elite runner.
Paul Tergat was very close to 6ft but not quite.
Kennedy is right under 6ft as well.
I know these aren't answers to your question. Just thought I would mention it.
John Henwood from NZ is 6"6 and has run 27.57 for 10000
David Kibet from Kenya was atleast 6"3 and ran around 3.32 for 1500 back in teh early 90's
Marko Koers from the Netherlands was atleast 6"3 and ran 1.44 and 3.32 (formerly from U of Illinoi)
John Walker, Steve Scott, Steve Cramm, Steve Ovett were all above 6" im pretty sure. We all know how good these guys ran.
Height is no limit or advantage to a runner. It all has to do with the proportions of muscles and body wieght suitable for the event. Only Indoor, taller runners may have a disadvantage.
If you are worried about being lanky, lift some wieghts!!
Peter Maher of England is like 6'5", 160+ and ran like 2:11.
I don't know exactly Pat Porter is but I know it's at least six feet tall.
....as a whole, tall runners have more gait like problems and big feet. big feet slow you down.
Bach (Jack Bacheler) was 6-6 9th in one Olympic marathon, made the final in another Olympic 5K
His "official" height, according to T&FN, is 5' 9", but I think El Guerrouj is actually more like 6' 0" or 6' 1". As evidence, consider the following photos:

Paula Radcliffe: 5' 8" (note the high heels in the pic)
Felix Sanchez: 5' 10"
Roger Bannister: 6' 1" (if I remember correctly)
I'd like to know if anyone out there in LetsRun.com poster-land has stood next to El G and can confirm (or deny) my suspicions.
Good sleuthing. From the photos I'd say he's no less than 5'11" and no more than 6'.
