Has anybody heard that Joe Klim is coaching the men's team at Akron. Isn't this guy a sprint coach? Why in the world would this guy take over the program?

Because Dennis Mitchell is going to be the next Head Coach at Ohio State (just kidding). I don't know...

Klim didn't inherit the entire men's program. he's in charge of the mens distance program. and he took the job because dennis mitchell and scott jones are looking for a puppet to coach the distance guys how they feel they oughtta be coached. also his wife just got hired as the new women's swim coach at Akron.[

they couldnt get a more suitable coach?
I wonder how the guys feel about this, I kinda feel bad for them...
It would be a tough sell to get someone who would:
A: Put up with Dennis trying to tell them how to coach distances with no money to give
B: Insanely low pay
did the akron guys pick up anybody new for the 06 season or what? I think they lost a few seniors...
Klim is a good guy who knows his stuff. It is my understanding that he coached a few 800-1500m post collegiates while at Penn State. Just give him a chance, I'm sure he'll do a fine job at Akron.
Good luck dealing with DM
I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy
Because he coached a few 800-1500 guys at PSU he is now qualified to coach an entire distance program including CC? Are you insane? Can you even name any runner from PSU in the last 25 years? This is a division I university trying to reach the upper echelon (sp?). This is a tremendous joke. Its pathetic beyond explanation. It is an insult to every man on that team. Think about it - if you put in 3 years under a true distance man, then the head coach says "hey, I got this great sprint coach who coached a couple of mid-distance guys once at PSU"...how would you respond? This is a bunch of crap and proves that Mitchell is unfit for collegiate coaching. Klim may be a nice guy and he may try hard, but he has NO BUSINESS taking this job when there are 100 more qualified and hungry young coaches in Ohio looking for a job just like this (regardless of pay).
OK well maybe that tells you that Dennis doesn't want the mens distance squad to be successful.
Get it?

That is a joke, "He has no business taking this job"...
You are a moron, if someone offers you a job (assuming you want it), you are not going to turn it down because you think some one else could do it better than you, unless you are an incapable dork. You are going to take it and believe you are the best person for the job.
This would be like someone saying I am a second round draft pick and please do not draft me in the first round, because those guys are better than I am.
Don't ever blame this guy for taking the job, blame (or if the time comes, credit) the guy who hired him...
I can't blame Klim for taking the job-it's just too right for him in his current situation.
What I could never figure out is why Scott Jones stays at Akron and puts up with Dennis Mitchell.
Good luck to both of them!
Q - is this THE Dennis Mitchell, of sprint fame?
Scott Jones is a good bloke, we were running chums a long time ago on the same club.
Maybe the guy who gave up the job and ex-GA shouldn't be so resentful to someone with more experience. Grow up! DM won the triple crown, give him credit where credit is due.
How many of those points came in the Pole Vault?
The athletes won the triple crown and the assistant coaches are the ones who coach them.
They should won the triple crown in spite of Dennis not because of him.
*they won the triple crown in spite of Dennis
Is there a link to any report on this? I'm just curious, because I try to go to Akron's athletic website and I get a runaround where it seems to be a generic page for CSTV.
From reading various threads on here I guess this Mitchell character isn't liked by a lot of people.
Anyway, give Klim a chance, like someone else said. You'd be surprised at what he knows, and what he's likely capable of. He not only coached a few post-collegiates during his time at PSU, but he coached under one of the great coaches of the late 70's and 80's in Art Gulden for several years. Don't think that while coaching sprinters/hurdlers/jumpers/multis, he didn't pick up a thing or two about distance running. He acted as assistant XC coach at Bucknell too, I believe.
In addition to that stuff, you'd probably be hard pressed to find someone who cares more about the athletes he coaches, or puts more into a full-fledged effort to see his athletes improve. Yes, I ran for him in the past (so obviously some of you will write me off as biased), but if you ask me, few people exist that are able to motivate athletes the way he can, and I really do think that, given the chance, Klim will find success at Akron. I, for one, wish him (and the program) good luck.
