achieve sub-3 hour marathon times after retiring or during off-season training?
I could do that time while scarfing down a dozen donuts. Pro soccer players should be embarrassed not to break 240 off a 3 month build.

This is barely a sub-elite women’s time
Most high level soccer players could do this. There are so many 14:xx 5k soccer guys out there, and I’m not talking with specific training no. Soccer is the training.

then why in 2020 did all of the soccer players have to fake mediocre 5k times
That is a stupid article, even by Runners World standards.
If you think the average premier league midfielder can’t run 16 minutes for 5k, you’re insane.
dont take this as a normal footballers achievement...
the bloke spent most of his career injured and hasnt played for over a year. endless injuries so im surprised he managed to complete a marathon at all. likely he didnt do any real training or volume
He completed his 5km run in 18 minutes and 29 seconds, with an average pace of 3:42 per kilometre.
His 10km effort was done in 39 minutes and 26 seconds, with an average of 3:55 per km.
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been the target of some major slagging after posting a suspiciously good 5km run-time, as everyone online competes with their running stats.
You know, the suspiciously good time of 17:46
What’s needed is an event that combines the speed, endurance and tenacity that’s required to be a top footballer. It could only be the mile.
That’s what AFC Bournemouth’s squad was tasked to do, at least. The criteria was simple: run 1600m (a fraction short of a mile) in 5 minutes and 35 seconds or quicker. Any slower and you’ve got work to do.

Why? They run like 10-12km a match and most of it is jogging, their endurance is nothing impressive outside of a few old players like Ji Sung Park
