I am starting to feel like every pair of shorts I buy are restrictive around the thighs. What is everyone else wearing for normal runs that feel loose, and light, but not 2.5" inseam or tights?

Nike Aeroswift 4". Durable, light, free.
Now- are they worth $90? No, few things are. But, I have replaced all my old shorts over time with them when I find em for a good deal ($30!) at a Nike Outlet semi-close.
They are the only shorts I'll wear anymore
my default suggestion is to embrace the 2.5" and shorter shorts, but some of the nike models that offer the 4" (or now it looks to be 5) should make the grade for you. adidas running shorts have not been it for me since maybe 2008, same for saucony and others.
Here are an array of nike ones at "reasonable" price points:
also, you are not seeming to be in the half-tight department, but these are amazing on value. the inner liner helps these be less non-schoolyard appropriate:
a lot of my stuff is older, but my nike stuff has really held up (minus the hideous activated stench when I sweat in them, but that has as much to do with laundering methods).
4"? I live in a Christian household, 5" or more!
J/K but I see if I can find a good deal on those. Nike shorts were actually what inspired this post though, so kind of skeptical, or at least the most recent pair that inspired me to post here.
I love Nike trail shorts. Short 5" fit and quality zipper pockets in the front and back. Sturdy enough to feel comfortable in public. But still good for running. Have like 5 pairs.
If you want the best for yourself then be prepared to spend a little more
$180 is wild...my wife would hurt me if I bought those...haha
If your wife is a model then she shouldn't care. $180 is what I spend on coffee and avo toast during my 3-day work week.
nike aeroswift are the best shorts I've ever run in

Man it hurts to upvote this guy, but Patagonia strider pro are the bomb
My favorite shorts are from BOA. I mostly wear their 1" inseam shorts, but they have some pairs with longer inseams:

New balance compression shorts are the method.
Sorry but the 2.5” shorts are just too tight around the sack. Maybe I’m packing more than average but still I can’t see how people wear 2.5” in the year 2026.
