Background: I (41M) am a lifelong runner who's never been particularly fast but would like to keep doing it and see if I can keep getting faster.
I've also had lifelong chronic insertional achilles pain in my left heel. I saw a doctor a few years ago that did an xray which showed what they called a Haglund's deformity. (I'm not totally confident in that, since I don't quite have the symptoms of Haglund's.) They recommended PT and load management, but said the likely outcome of things like this is an MRI for further diagnosis and surgery.
I've seen a PT for 2 years who's actually helped a lot, kept me running consistently while minimizing the pain. But it's gotten worse in recent months, and has me thinking again about the surgery route.
A lot of what I've read about surgery makes it sound like even after you're recovered, you still deal with achilles pain, and if so, it doesn't really sound like a net-positive. On the other hand, if I knew that a surgical treatment could actually totally eliminate the issue, I would be willing to spend the time and money to get to that endpoint.
So, I'm looking for other people's experience with having surgery for insertional achilles issues. What did that look like, and how has the pain been post-surgery?
