Looking at some results doesn't it seem odd that so many people DNF in races as of recent? In the 10k over the weekend, around 5 runners DNF. I understand if they were injured, but most of the time when a runner DNF's you see them racing the next weekend, so injury is unlikely.
I think that it's pretty crappy for someone to DNF just becasue they feel unable to preform to the top of their ability. As kids, we're taught to never give up, but you see the elite quit often.
And conservation of energy is not a good excuse, we're talking about distance runners here, who would have been putting in higher milage if they didn't have a race anyways...
