What type of cat should I get?

Not technically a cat, but if I had a nice fenced in back yard, my priority would be getting a charcoal grill with a complete outdoor grilling station. That's my recommendation.

Why do you want a cat that is fat and lazy? If the cat is outdoors all day then you obviously don't even want a cat. Let someone else who is actually going to take care of a cat get one.

Either take care of the cat or don't get one. Making a cat fat on purpose is borderline animal neglect

Have you considered a greyhound?

The advantage of getting a cat is they are available in stripes. Most pets aren't.

Just try and get a striped dog, rat, hamster, gerbil, or parrot. Not likely.

With cats, possibly even most of them have stripes. At least close to 50%.

Otherwise, you'll be looking at mainly fish or reptiles, like a garter snake or zebra danio, for the stripes option.

If it's a male then make sure to get it neutered. Male outdoor cats wander all over town and get into all sorts of trouble. Also, very high probability of getting hit by a car at some point. Lots of cats die that way. But then again, the alternative is years of medical bills as your cat's health deteriorates and you end up making the decision to euthanize. Not a very pleasant part of the experience.

I fed a cat under my deck in 20 degree weather. When I was out feeding the birds before work in the dark the cat heard me and went over the neighbors 7-8 foot metal fence in about 2 seconds. He jumped up on the porch railing about 6 feet high.

Pet cats are not safe in freezing weather. They are from warm climates. They also need extra food water and dry shelter. Bales of straw help. They need to be pet to be happy. Make sure you neuter or spayed so you do not have to many and have to watch them suffer. Outside cats get eaten by coyote's and killed by cars and conflict with other cats see neuter above. If you do not want to take care of it don't get one.

The cat will climb the fence. Outdoor cats live short lives. Get mauled by the neighbors dog. Get hit by a car. Sounds like you want a dog, not a cat.

Get a koi pond if you want outdoor pets.

If you want your pet cat to live, do not keep it outside.

It needs to be an indoor cat.

Predators, diseases (FIV), toxins, and especially cars will kill an outdoor cat within 2 or 3 years. And likely a very painful death.

99% of the draw with a cat is indoors. Hanging with you, sleeping with you, playing with you. Full time outdoor cat is not really a pet.

Yeah. He should just move into an area with a decent number of strays. The closest thing I ever had to a pet cat was an orange neighborhood cat that used to come hangout by my porch. I named him Bob. He’d come around in the evening. I’d give home some milk and send him on his way. Had another that had a striped pattern on his side that looked like a bullseye. I named him target. Neither was dependent on me and my house didn’t smell like a litter box.
