Well, it's Wednesday around midday so I guess he probably is wearing casual clothes and just ate lunch in the school cafeteria. I doubt he could run sub-4:25 RIGHT NOW. If he's in jeans or dressy shoes, I would say he can't break 4:45.

Didn’t he just run a 3:46 1500 about a week ago? That’s like a 4:02 mile. I love how people who don’t appear to know much about the science of our sport just think that Cooper is going to be a phenom at every distance. He’s too big and has too much raw speed (yes that matters. There’s such a thing as having too much speed for longer distances and the sciences proves it) to run at a high elite level for the mile or over. 59 second laps for four laps is going to be hard for him and I doubt he ever runs faster than about 3:55. He has run XC before. Look at his performances; they’re terrible. He broke 17 minutes for the 5k like two times. People make all these assumptions without looking at actual evidence.

But isn't he The Second Coming in this sport? That's what the 400/1500 threads appear to be saying.

These people hype up every new star and delude themselves that that person will somehow be able to accomplish feats that no person before has ever been able to. They said that Athing Mu was going to run 1:52 her second year as a pro. Didn’t happen. They said Jakob was going to break every WR from 1500 to marathon. Didn’t happen and never will. Asbel Kiprop was supposed to run 3:25 and succeed at every distance. Didn’t happen. Jeremy Wariner ran 43 and won an Olympic gold among other medals. Surely he will dominate the 800 when he finally moves up. After all, somebody that fast should cake walk those slow 800 guys. Didn’t happen. There’s literally hundreds of examples like this. Matt Boling. Didn’t happen. So many others. Didn’t happen. Didn’t happen. Didn’t happen. The one exception to the superhuman phenom idea is Sifan Hassan. Other than that, it’s the usual case where someone has exceptional talent at one even and is pretty good at the distance below or above it, but not elite.

he broke 16 a few times you mean. not terrible.
He ran 48/1:53 as an 8th grader. Then ran a 16:23 cross country as a freshman. Pretty great range for a 9th grader focused on the 800m.
He has not run an official 1500m since becoming a pro. Anything he ran a was time trial. Which means nothing. Last year, he ran a 1:52 800m time trial which he was extremely pleased with, then ran 1:46 in a real race.

That was his brother not him. He’s never run a 1500m

So you make up a race and then use it as evidence? Most 800m runners move up at least serviceably to the 1500. Marco Arop, Donavan Brazier, Isaiah Harris, Brandon Miller, Peter Bol, Josh Hoey, Mohamed Attaoui all have good to really good PBs. The difference might be that Lutkenhaus is potentially better than all at them in the 400. Still it would be a surprise if he isn’t decent at the mile. Not world class necessarily, but decent.

I didn’t make up a race. I didn’t realize his brother ran that 3:46. All I saw was the message board thread title and made the assumption that it was him. I admit I made a mistake. It doesn’t matter anyways. Cooper still has a 4:06 pb mile.
All the guys you listed are at least serviceable, but you left off all the ones who are comparatively terrible at the 15 or mile. David Rudisha, Wilson Kipketer, Yuriy Borzakovskiy, Alberto Juantorena, Knadevis Robinson, Emmanuel Korir, Keely Hodgkinson, Jarmila Kratochvilova, plenty of others. It depends on what you mean by decent. Of course Cooper can run a mile much faster than the average person, but not one fast enough for him to be considered a factor for the Olympics, WCs, or even the qualifying races. The speed orientated types are hardly ever great at the mile. Their endurance declines really quickly with distance. You should read my earlier post.
