I have watched a few interviews and podcasts recently, where top D1 and other elite runners admitted that they don't really know the names of historic runners, or even current pros, and that they are unfamiliar with certain (in my opinion) historic world record or world championship races. Now I'm wondering: does this give them a mental advantage because they can be more focused on themselves? Is it possible that coaches advise them not to "study" racing too much? Or are they simply not interested?
