Just announced on Strava. Non running related injury and claims it came from soccer. Hope he can come back from it. Worrisome to see an injury like this so early in his career.
Strava connects millions of runners, cyclists, hikers, walkers and other active people through the sports they love – all on our mobile app and website.
If you're a prodigy in running in your country -- you don't play soccer. Forget stress fracture, you could have torn your ACL with those lateral moves.

Hi All,
Just a 16 year old playing soccer with his mates during his rest after a season. Thought it was just a tight calf but found out it was a minor stress fracture after an MRI. He is very good at biking and swimming cross training and the priority is just making sure we are careful. He will be fine. Good to learn good injury management early. Obviously better not to have injuries but also don't want to live a life wrapped up in cotton wool when 16.
He actually gets really fit on the bike. Lots of early learning.
You get a stress fracture over a long period of time. Not from a couple days of playing soccer. I wouldn’t be so quick to label this non running related.

Of course you can, what are you talking about? In my day it was called - green-stick fracture. I got one from playing soccer at Sam's age as well.

Ha, a green stick fracture is not a stress fracture. It is a common pediatric fracture morphology for acute fractures, and is easily seen on X-ray.
These things happen even to HS age running. Im guessing he'll be down for a few months and then probably back to breaking records this time next year at the latest. Maybe even back for World u20s or commonwealth games.

He's a kid. Needs to enjoy his life as well as his running. Unless you want this prodigy to burn out by the time he's 21

Nonsense. I've gotten one stress fracture, ONE. I was running on grass and on dirt trails at the time. There goes your effing theory.

very unusual to get a "stress" fracture from one game of soccer, and also very unusual for a healthy teenage guy to get an acute fracture playing soccer without a definite twist/mechanism of injury (quite different to tight calf type onset/feeling). Sounds like dancing on a pin to not call this a stress fracture from running/training/racing, but whatever...
You simply cannot get a stress fracture from a soccer game or two.
The stress fracture or really it seems a ‘stress reaction’, occurs over weeks usually months from overuse or the bone in question not having time to heal.
Great that it was caught and diagnosed, as this kid is really amazing.
But yes, it happened from running, and in my experiences at this age, probably from repeated sessions, most likely in spikes.
