I changed the link. Initially, the OP just linked to the instagram of the throw which you can find in my article.
Ah, those favorable Great Plains winds. Gotta love 'em.
A WR for Val (Allman) Sion coming next?
It's like doping, right?
I don't get how our sport can have wind requirements for sprinting but not for the discus. It makes ZERO sense
But I'd rather see a wind-aided American record than a doped record.
The record he broke belonged to Ben Plucknett who threw a then world record of 71.20 on June 4, 1981. On July 7th, he threw 72.34. On July 13th, he was banned the IAAF to a steroid positive that dated from Janury 31 or February 1, but USATF (TAC at the time) allowed the mark to stay as a US record for some reason. Plucknett was the first athlete to ever lose a WR to a doping test.
Back to Mattis, he's 32 and has been competing for a long time. His pb every where else on planet earth is just 68.74 meters.
Does anyone remember why TAC didn't strip the mark from Plucknett? Update. I learned back then federations didn't have to follow IAAF rulings which is wild.
I think the idea of splitting the discus record into-out-of-stadium and in-stadium might work. I suppose you can still catch a flyer in stadium but it’s way less predictable
Stona is the Olympic champ but got well whacked here. And it's great that the discus heavers have a spot that works so well for them.
Even our fascist dictator RoJo acknowledges the performances, with a nod to Plucknett's doped mark from 1981. And let's not forget who was 2nd ranked American at discus the year prior to Plucknett's NR! 69.46!!

Why not just have an absolute wind reading max of 2.0 like they do in the sprints?

I dont know much about this kind of math but the fact that a discus has a wedge shaped zone it can legally fly in would make cross winds interact differently than in a straight ahead sprint
Some track fan needs to develop some kind of fluid mechanics computer model to test the impacts of headwind speeds and wind directions on discus throws. Sounds like a good senior thesis project.
Sad to see Mattis as the one who broke a legit record. Pluknett would've throw 77m at Ramona, and Mattis has HORRIBLE technique. A whole host of past Americans would've destroyed Mattis at Ramona. Sorry to see him with the "record".

Of course the assumption is Mattis is clean. Which is hard to do with any thrower - for over 60 years - if you really know the sport.

Pretty sure this type of calculation is exactly why Ramona was specifically chosen to become a discus Mecca of sorts. They sought out the "best" wind they could find and developed facilities to harness it

A wind reading instrument that's sitting on the ground is not going to correctly record the wind speed that is effecting the discus way up in the air. And I don't think anyone wants to build a 50 foot high wind reader.
Anyone else happy to see the last American mens 70s/80s 'drug era' records finally off the books? Now if only Ethan Katzberg can get that hammer WR.....
