Just learned of this. I thought this was a typo, but then I talked to a coach that was at that meet and said it was legit.
it will be great to see what he can do as the season progresses. I’ve never watched him do a speed workout, but I’ve seen his unbelievable strength in person. I’m not sure where the Utah State meet falls this year. I hope not on the same week as Pre Classic. My guess that either Webbs or LV’s record will become #2 all time.

Incredible if true, do you have a link? Based on his track results last season, and his monster performances in XC I thought he was a Ritz type, all engine and no wheels, but his 800 and now this alleged relay split paint a very different picture. He could end up an all time great!

It seems that gets said almost every year; but no one ever comes close.

Not many guys have had the ability to run 14:16 on Woodward and split 47.8
If he gets into a good race on a good day, I could see either record going down this season
One thing about Soles - his ability to develop speed alongside aerobic capacity is unmatched. Never seen a coach who has done it so consistently. Isaac Cortes ran 49.7, 1:50.2, and 4:04.0 ten years ago, when that was still REALLY fast
Should Soles be working with collegiate/pros so that he doesn’t give people their best days as high schoolers? He’s incredible, but maybe we need to utilize his skill set at a higher level.

Link to Jackson Spencer’s 4x400 split. You can see he goes out extremely fast the first 200. I had him at 47.89 on my watch and all our coaches had him sub 48. We ran 3:22 and our boys have the fastest time in Utah. 4 distance boys. Haha!

No HSers have been in pro miles outdoors in a minute.
Hobbs ran 3:34 & Owen 3:36.
As far the 2 mile, same thing. It’s a fairly weak record compared to the mile. And the best runners pursue the mile. But nevertheless, Drew Griffith ran 8:31 with a 4:06 last mile, in a HS only race, leading. Far more impressive.

it will not come down to ability, but opportunity. i know a 3:55 miler whose best 400/5k was 49.9/13:52, but could not solo a 13:54 like spencer did. i'd bet a million this kid could solo a sub-4 at sea level. if he doesn't break webb's record, he'll get close...
Danny Simmons definitely could have gotten the 2mile record had he been in a pro 2-mile race (13:25 is way more impressive than 8:29). There are probably a dozen more guys that had the ability to get that record, but the problem is that there are basically not fast 2-miles at the pro level outside of some years at Pre (which this year will probably be a low 8min race at least).
Lukas Verzbicas was fortunate the 2-mile at pre was tactical the year he was in it which allowed him to hang at the back of the pack for a good bit and pulled to the record.

A 47.89 split at 4k feet of altitude is certainly worth 49 low in an open 400 at sea level.
Great speed for a distance guy and no doubt he can run 1:49/48 this season if he tries although why focus on a great 800 when you can run a record 2 mile/5k.
They only like to mention altitude adjustments when it makes them look faster. Great run but he’s definitely not splitting 47.x in the south at sea level.
That being said, freak athlete, hope he actually goes after 8:30 at Arcadia will be fun to watch.

4:04 is is obviously impressive in HS for that era, but a 4:04 miler should be able to be a 1:50 guy who should easily be a 49.xx guy. There's no real outlier there, they all go hand in hand. Not at all trying to knock anyone here btw, but Cortes only went on to run 1:51.8/4:08 in college.
I feel like nothing about using Cortes as an example proves any point about Spencer or was relevant here. His 47.8 split and XC Nationals wins speak for themselves, I don't think anybody really cares about running 14:16 at some questionable distance grass track.
If you were trying to point out examples of runners with impressive / unique range, people like Kyle Barber come to mind. Was a nationally elite XC runner over a decade ago while running 54.8 in the 400H as a junior, 1:51.4 over 800m as a senior, and splitting 46.91 FAT on his 4th event of the day. Even triple jumped 42'7" for good measure. Much more of an outlier example of someone who possessed an interesting skillset.

I think it's worth noting for Cortes that both the 1600 and 800 were in the state finals where he had massive kick to win both. If you watch both races that's the first thing that stands out. I'm not sure how many kids have won a CA state title in both 800 and 1600 but I can't think of anyone outside of Cortes off the top of my head, 1600/3200 is the usual double and any double is tough because it is CA.
The last point about Soles is very true. I'm glad to see him getting his due respect when for so long his programs were synonymous with "burnout." He builds distance athletes not runners! I remember an old training talk he gave where he talks about how his program is meant to develop athletes who can win races and kick. Cortes was certainly that type of athletes and he had a few teammates in those 2016 state races who weren't far off either! I had no idea Jackson Spencer had this kind of speed but it really should be no surprise with Coach Soles at the helm!

I’d be curious to hear more about this. What does the training look like to develop speed alongside aerobic capacity, both at such a high level?

Again, if someone is a 4:04 miler, they're almost certainly capable of 1:50.2 and 49.7. So I'd imagine your question is just about how to get someone to run a 4:04 mile. This isn't some anomaly like Sahlman being top-20 at NCAA XC while being able to run 1:44 indoors. All of those times go hand in hand with running a mile that fast.
Really not trying to be argumentative, but having coached over a dozen sub-4:05 guys over the years, every single one of them has been a 1:50 or better guy that can go 49.xx, save a couple here or there that were more like 50-51/1:51-1:52 guys but had sub-14 strength and ran really well over XC. Cortes was a great runner, but is not an example of "developing speed alongside aerobic capacity at such a high level".
The rule of thumb was once that any kid turning out sub-1:50 and sub-9:00 in high school had a golden opportunity to be "one of the guys" after a few consistent years.
I've posted on here before highlighting the rarity of a sub-1:46 All American NCAA XC runner; I believe it was in relation to Colin Sahlman or Lopez Lomong. This kid sounds like his name will soon join the conversation.
