College coaches hang in L.A. during Spring and Summer and poach L.A. HS rather than developing in-state HS prospects. There's dozens of sold out HS meets in L.A. even in Jan, Feb.
When I looks at at how things have changed from when I grew up, everything has leveled up. Elementary schools operate like middle schools, middle schools like high, high schools act like collages and now collages try to be professional sports. We live is a privileged time.

We do, and I think it's amazing. I want my children to have the best opportunities and resources possible. People in this country used to believe in that, and it was great.
I don’t know of any public schools that pay for kids to go to meets. Track is an inexpensive sport compared to lots of other sports. Also, flying is not very expensive normally and some of the top kids get flights and/or hotel paid for. Compared to club soccer or other club sports, track is a bargain.
It is an investment for the parents, who hope that their kids will get D1 scholarships and save bigly on tuition.
That's not even close to being true. Unless you happen to live at a high altitude, you can run just as fast in your home state as you can in another state.
It’s an opportunity to compete against the best or to enjoy a great track or team experience. For some kids they will definitely run faster. Others actually run slower. The competitive kids want to race the best and enjoy doing so. Most are friends or at least know each other by the time they reach Junior or Senior year. It’s fun for them.

These days having opportunities makes you less of a person, and using those opportunities makes you evil.
