Fun to look at the different approaches.. In that one video Keely she says racing feels easy because of how deep she goes in training.. Obviously 99% of us aren't on the world stage but it can be fun to go to the well sometimes.
I've never understood where the heck the idea that running is painful came from? At the most, even in races, the worst thing you can experience is discomfort. If you are in pain then STOP, there's something wrong. See a doctor. Or quit. Running isn't for you.
I'm out of shape for bicycle riding. But my ride into town i 2 miles uphill. It justs gets steeper and steeper. So yes, my legs were screaming, but I really enjoyed pushing it to the limit. So much so, that I did it again on two mre hills.
It's weird how we respond emotionally to the fatigue. It's not always what you expect.
Plot twist: no pain needed in races either unless it’s your livelihood, else no one else cares about your silly times.
Maybe not needed, but some people see value, and even find enjoyment, in pushing themselves hard occasionally. That sometimes involves pushing to the point of substantial discomfort in a race.
Some people also like setting and achieving goals. Sometimes achieving a goal involves pushing yourself to a level of discomfort.
Will anyone else be impressed? Will they “care”? No.
Are my times slow and my goals silly? They probably look that way to a lot of people, and maybe to everyone. I have no problem with that whatsoever.
Here’s the thing: That part of the running experience is for me, not for other people.
nah that’s stupid, in order to run fast you need to know how to embrace the pain. It doesn’t matter how fit you are, you are going to hurt in a race if you are giving it your all. And I’m not saying to overtrain, but I think it is necessary to have a few workouts that hurt so that you know how to push yourself during a race

I think it was Prefontaine who said..."I can endure more discomfort than anyone you know. That is why I win. I can endure more discomfort."

Different people experience pain differently.
Competitive runners used to talk about hurt-pain-agony to describe the different levels of their perception of the feelings they experienced when running very hard.
Is 'discomfort' another level of feeling/experience, perhaps a milder form of hurt?
Runners who only experience discomfort while training/running extremely hard are fortunate.
I have no doubt that Keely experiences pain and perhaps agony when she fears and then completes very hard training sessions that result in her unable to think or see properly while lying on the ground in a fetal position.
Unless she has a really low tolerance for pain and/or is a wimp, that type of reaction indicates she is experiencing more than mere discomfort.

I think we can all agree that Pre's vocabulary wasn't his forte.

The problem with that is that pain is usually going to force you to slow down.
