I don't think this is a good idea. Atheltes should be able to make as much as they can. Normal students can build startups, be influencers, etc – so why shouldn't athletes?

And people also switch jobs all the time – what's the problem with switching colleges for a better opportunity? Again – normal students can transfer at will.

Before NIL, student-athletes were being paid. It was called an athletic scholarship. Free board, food, travel, healthcare, and most importantly, a free education. Enough of this NIL crap.

A top QB brings a TON of money to a college. Why shouldn't he get paid?

The thing is that the athletes are getting paid by conglomerates that are supposedly not affiliated with the university but clearly coordinate with the coaches. The name, image, and likeness of some random above average offensive lineman isn’t worth much in an actual individual marketplace - no shoe company or fitness brand is going get any return on partnering with them and using their name. But the conglomerates will pay because they know that linemen win football games, not because the name, image and likeness of the linemen is valuable to businesses.

I am supportive of players earning money on their own using their talents, but not in the way that the current system operates. If Fernando Mendoza wants to independently sign an apparel deal with Nike that’s great, but that’s not the same as someone like Mark Cuban cutting him multi-million dollar checks for playing for Indiana and not some other school.

Because college sports are amateur athletics… a side hustle for getting a college education. Or at least that’s how it once was.

Schools should take that money the top QB is bringing in and use it to actually improve the school and students… you know offer more academic scholarships, pay professors more, etc, etc, and not give it back to that kid just so he can squander the money on nice things like a Ferrari. If that top QB wants to make a lot of money as a teenager, then fix the NFL… let a kid try out for the league at any age he wants. It works for the NBA. Do guys named Kobe and LeBron sound familiar?

Is not that they get paid but it’s how and how much they get paid. The ncaa went from strict regulations to no regulations. It has less regulations than pros. That’s why some pro athletes are going to college for better pay. The system has went Wild. The best college and the one with the boosters that spend the most. That doesn’t even happen in the nfl.

Top college athletes should make more money than just scholarships. But millions and the ability to change teams yearly? It’s just too wild and goes against what college athletics is suppose to be about.

Now grandpa trump isn’t going to get the old system like he wants. However, it does need better regulations to make it reflect concept of STUDENT athletics.

I’m not really sure what to make of this but why in the hell is he worrying about this now? There’s a lot of big sh!t going on now that needs a lot more attention than this.

Of course this will not work. Executive order only effective for federal workers, not for colleges and athletes.

Also no athletes or agents were involved in these discussions. Folks like dinosaurs Saban and Meyer have Trump's ear, but are no longer relevant.

What's needed is a unified congressional law for entire country with clear rules for scholarships, athlete pay, and Nil. That would eliminate each State, and State court changing the landscape every week. It's too late to put idea of athlete pay and sponsorship back in the bottle.

Maybe this at least provides a first step toward a serious solution.

1. This^ is idiotic and written in bad faith and you know it. The situation pre-House was so bad it was almost comical. The NCAA was one of the most hated organizations in the United States.

2. That said, the current system needs a lot of reform. It is a mess as-is.

3. That won't happen through an executive order, though. The courts have unanimously shown themselves to be against the NCAA in basically every way possible, especially the supreme court. Don't believe me? Go listen to the oral arguments from House and read the opinion of the court. Complete smackdown in.

Agree with this. The current system is a mess. It is biased against US athletes, is completely opposed to the fundamental educational role of the US collegiate system, it benefits a select few high end athletes but it has ruined a system that worked well for a much broader swath of student athletes.

This is one area where we need somebody to step up and force action. I can’t stand Trump but he may be the right person to push this issue. Executive action is not the answer but someone needs to light a fire under Congress so we can get some order back.

NIL is here to stay but several simple NCAA regulations can reign in it's negative effects. 1. Limit transfers to one transfer per athlete period. 2. reimpose the old transfer rule which requires an athlete to sit out the season after a transfer. 3. Reign in redshirt rules. 4. Age limits.

Each of these would tame the current NIL system which has drastically shifted the clout away from Universities and shifted it too far to the individual athletes especially ones that are chasing $$$ but not an education. Athletes would still get paid very well but schools would get to maintain the stability of their roster better and HS prospects would regain more clout. Age limits would further level the playing field and eliminate "pro level" elites from displacing younger athletes who are actually trying to get an education too. Further, each of these rules would help bring parity back while maintaining NIL, education emphasis and conference stability.

No, they are not. The House settlement eliminated the NIL collectives.

The athletes are now being paid directly by the schools who have a salary cap of 20.5 million.

Legitimate NIL deals with Nike, Adidas, etc are still allowed.
