I think it's a fair take to say that as long as Cooper isn't coming off an injury, he'll never lose again to Hoey, though that would of course require some luck in the sense that he'd have to never mess up too badly tactically.

Cooper's speed is very likely better than Hoey considering he ran 46.3 after having run 1:47 at the state meet (and having a 45 low split from earlier that season), and he did that while still far from his peak (probably 1:45 shape, maybe 1:44). Given the double, and being far from his peak, I think Cooper's 400 when he ran 1:42 is 44.9 or so. Hoey is clearly more of a strength guy given his 3:29, so his 400 is more than likely slower than Cooper.

As good as Cooper is, we really have no idea what to expect. I am sure there were Rojo types predicting that Jim Ryun would never lose to so and so back in the 1960s. Time has a way of humbling us, and hot takes might draw an audience, but they usually are not wagered upon by the smart folks.

I'll reiterate by saying, that no I don't think Cooper is never going to lose against Josh again. But I do believe it's in the realm of possibility.

I think this is the last year Josh has to beat Cooper, and I also don't see it happening outdoors. 17 year olds usually don't get stuck on a plateau with times. If Cooper stays healthy, I seriously think he'll be in world record shape during the outdoor season. After this year, Cooper might do to the 800 what Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone did to the women's 400 hurdles.

You make some great points here as Cooper is fast as Hoey is as well. It’s crazy to say “never” as that means even one time means “never” loses.

lets run the numbers: Cooper’s raw speed as raw speed is so important in the 800m. But Hoey has raw speed to as he set the 600m indoor record. Cooper has higher running but Hoey is amazing as amazing is as good as higher running.

so it’s crazy to say never as I would never say that. Never means never which is crazy. Cooper is crazy fast as Hoey is too. They’re both crazy fast and never will back down.

1.5 seconds in the men's 800 is an eternity. This is sort of like saying a guy who ran 44.0 a month ago will never beat a high schooler who just ran 44.75 ever again. They won't race often, and hoey is injured, so rojos prediction might come true, it's just sort of silly rhetoric.

Hoey seems to be a guy that peaks early and then declines. Wether he or Lutkenhaus wins would be determined mostly by their timing for a peak. Great rivalry shaping up.

This is the 2nd time today you’ve posted about an “insane” take of rojo's that was actually reasonable. And rojo usually does have insane takes but not these two.

Maybe rojo knows that Cooper is going to duck Hoey for his whole career. Or expects that Hoey is about to receive a lifetime ban. We'll eventually know if rojo is a moron, or a mad genius.

Well… It’s possible. How bad is Hoey’s injury? He may not have a good summer after that injury.

Josh is already 26 years old. He will be 27 in the fall. The 800m is typically a young person game.

This may have been the last season where Josh could be faster than Cooper.

Next year, Cooper will be 18 and Josh 27.

I think you’re heavily underestimating Cooper in a diamond league race. They always have their pace lights and pacers and are set up as time trials (which make for horribly boring races unless they’re true world record attempts) which I think would suit Cooper perfectly.

If you watch Cooper’s races he’s always running out in lane two for a significant chunk of the race (even when he ran 1:42), he’d heavily benefit from good pacing and being stuck on the rail.

Cooper has literally ran 1:42.27 which is faster the the world record so obviously he would win under any circumstances
