Plenty of names to choose from after this weekend's record riot.
One name caught my attention following several reviews of the meet results.
A name probably familiar to TN hs fans but otherwise pretty much unknown.
Until now.
Referring to one Claire Stegall.
Two-time TN Gatorade T&F Runner of the Year. 4:36.89/mile pr from last spring.
Now a frosh at FL.
151st @ NCAAs xc last fall. 2:41.72/1000 last month in her first college track race.
Buried in the BU Valentine mile results is one Claire Stegall. Not in the highly publicized ESP/BYU-dominated first heat where all the records were set. But in heat #2 -- which she won in 4:25.91, a time much faster than marks put up by a slew of more famous names who ran BU on Saturday.
So, 4:36 -> 4:25 in eight months. Not being profane, but . . . Jeezuz.
As the thread title implies, where'd this come from?
Several hs girls now break 4:40 in the mile each year. But don't know of any of those who have dropped over 10 seconds a year later.
Suddenly, a favorite to make NCAA finals next month. Don't expect Stegall to contend for the title. However, she could pick up a valuable point or two with a top-8 finish to help FL in its bid for the team title.
Could have named a few others for out-of-nowhere mention.
However, Claire stood out like a flashing Florida Gator blue & orange light.
