Based on his high school career could anyone have guessed that Colin Sahlmans best event was going to be the 800m? I know you jackoffs are going to respond with things about his potential in the 1500, even bigger jackoffs will mention the 5000, but this dude just won the Millrose Games 800m. He beat a 1:42 guy. I don’t care that he got 16th in XC, he is an incredible all around runner whose best event is the 800m. As I asked, who would have guessed this?

And just to be clear, this thread is in response to his race at BU tonight, where he ran 3:52.30 for 4th in a race won in 3:50.37. He was not close. People were speculating sub 3:50 for him before this race. He is a runner with amazing raw speed, amazing talent, but seemingly no tactical awareness. When he goes pro I see him having a career similar to Josh Hoey, amazing time trials, less than stellar championship results. Which is just fine. Fast times are very fun to watch, and unlike some very weird people on this message board, I think fast times put people in all time great conversations even if they can’t figure it out on the big stage. Despite my criticism of Sahlmans poor championship record, and lackluster mile results, I still think he is one of the best runners ever in the NCAA, and a top 5 high school runner all time.
Well if his best event is the 800m, I will say that his best time is 3.79 seconds off the world record, and so he will have his work cut out to ever be an Olympian, as in this age of bicarbonate supplements, his 1:44.70 is quite pedestrian. But time will tell.

I know you mentioned potential in the 1500 and 5000 but omitting the 10,000 altogether is just a mistake. His build alone screams 10k. He had a really solid cross country finish as a guy that is more 800 inclined. As he gets older, builds more volume over time, that 1:44 speed is going to make for a LETHAL kick over 10,000. I think 2036 we’ll be seeing a thread “COLIN MF SAHLMAN 10,000 OLYMPIC CHAMP!”
Jake Wightman is a 1:43 guy and still a 1500 runner at the championship level. Curious to see what Colin will pick for NCAA but I still think his future is the 1500.
His 47.97 400 is great for the 1500 but Hoey split 47.6 en route to his 600 record. The 800 is another level.

only your typical letsrun.com poster could possibly write "his 1:44.70 is quite pedestrian". This site is full of sub 1:40 800m, sub-12:10 5000m, 25:45 10000m athletes. No wait. SMH

Well when a 16 year old runs 2.43 seconds faster, then even someone like you can see that it is relatively pedestrian for a 22 year old national class talent.
He's tough to nail down, because you'd think with his 400/800 speed he'd be lethal in tactical 1500 races. But...he doesn't have a great track record in those. He keeps improving year on year, so I think eventually he'll find his event.
I've been trying to come up with a comp for him, and maybe it's Alan Webb? Really impressive range from 400 up through 10k cross, but the speed doesn't translate to a great tactical kick?

my gripe is never really people calling 1:44 pedestrian, it’s the following slobbering over objectively worse times in longer events because of “potential”

Brosnan could turn this kid into a world-record holder. Bring back the Beatles, put the Young's and Colin under Brosnan’s coaching again and let it rip
Anything but the 800 if Lutkenhaus keeps up soing what he’s done so far.
That 1:44 he posted today was scary. I think some of the older 800 guys may bolt to another even or retire if Cooper blasts one or two fast times outdoors / at Nats.
