After running his 3:48 mile in Boston on Saturday, Ruthe flew to North Carolina and was initially planning on racing the mile at the Camel City Distance meet on Saturday. But he is not listed among the entries and JDL Fast Track's Craig Longhurst confirmed to me that Ruthe is not planning on racing Saturday. Sam has instead decided to train this week and will next race in the mile at next week's ASICS Sound Invite in Winston-Salem against Cole Hocker, Festus Lagat, and Cooper Teare.
Makes sense to me. The Ruthes' plan coming over to the US was for Sam to face competition unavailable to him in NZ, so I understand wanting to maximize your opportunities. But I think a race this weekend would have been mostly Sam on his own, and I don't think he would have gone any faster than he did at BU. Now he gets the chance to recover, get in a few workouts, then race a big mile next week, and presumably one more at BU the week after that.
