Relief as World Athletics ratifies Phanuel Koech’s World U20 1500m record
Kenya’s teenage prodigy Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech can now officially call himself a world record holder after his 1500m mark at the 2025 Meeting de Paris in June was ratified. The then 18-year-old ran 3:27.72 to finish second behind Azeddine Habz during the Paris Wanda Diamond League meeting, breaking the previous U20 world record of 3:28.81 set by fellow Kenyan Ronald Kwemoi in Monaco in 2014. The performance also placed Koech ninth on the senior world all-time list, a remarkable feat for a teenager in just his second 1500m race. Few had heard of Koech before the 2025 Paris Diamond League, but his stunning performance instantly put him on the global athletics map. A month later, he followed up in London with a 3:28.82 victory in the Diamond League, beating world champion Josh Kerr and proving that his record was no fluke. Born 16 km away from Eldoret City in Naiberi and later moving to Kewapmoi in Uasin Gishu County, Koech was inspired to take up running by St. Francis Kimuron High alumni, including world record holder David Rudisha and 2021 Olympic champion Emmanuel Korir. He started competitive running in 2019 at Tingwa Primary School before being guided by manager Eric Lilot. Koech trains alongside Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Diamond League 1500m champion Nelly Chepchirchir. Despite a disappointing outing at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, where he was tripped in the final lap and missed the semi-finals, all eyes will be on Koech this season, with less than 100 days to go before the official 2026 Diamond League season kicks off at Qatar Sports Club in Doha.
1. Age cheating is extremely easy to catch, and a lot easier than catching someone using PEDS. They wouldn’t have ratified the U20 record if he was actually 23. 2. Only Jakob and El G have run a faster time than Koech at the age of 23. IF** Koech was 23, he still ran faster than Lagat, Kiprop, Morceli, Habz, Hocker, Kerr when all of them were 23.

If Koech is 23 then he wasn’t under 20. How stupid are you?
Age cheating is so easy to catch that FIFA had to implement the MRI wrist test to catch cheats. The test ahowed that literally wvry country on the African continent was stuffing their junior squads with athletes 24 yrs of age on up.

There is a potent tendency in this site to bring FIFA MRI, especially when we know that an African country won with brio the last U20 FIFA World Cup.
You are bringing news dating of at least 10 years.
Cameroon U17 players have successfully passed their MRI test ahead of the AFCON 2025.

You have the emotional intelligence and reading comprehension of a malnourished 7 year old. I was making the argument that his WR is unbelievable impressive for the time run, and used the accusation I quoted of “Koech being 23” to contrast just how impressive his time was, even if it was run at the age of 23.
Not sure if you’re stupid or stuck in a time warp - FIFA mandated the MRI scans in 2009. So yes, in 2026 it is very easy to catch age cheats in athletics prior to ratifying an age category WR.
My original statement that it is demonstrably easier to catch an age cheat than someone using PEDS still stands true. Make the case about increased testing protocols in and out of competition, stripping prior wins and records with a lifetime ban if caught. But haphazardly echoing accusations about “age cheats” as a way to write off a young Kenyan’s accomplishment shows your ignorance and prejudice.
