Good point ... but I would counteract that with you are wasting your time running 160k a week if you can't stomach biocarb ... you are already by default an also ran.

Problem is, you and I get this, but the masses do not. Nearly every top-10 time from my college alma mater has been replaced. 50 years of history wiped clean from the books in a matter of a few years. To make room for what? Slop times run at BU on $200 bouncy-shoes and bi-carb. Such is life I guess.

Was just wondering what peoples thoughts were on the subject . The positive is that old drug induced records will soon all be obsolete and that's got to be a massive positive !!!
One thing I find interesting is that distance running seems to be tracking a long the same lines as swimming where teenage Phenoms are becoming more the norm (less resistance from the shoes perhaps?) and my prediction just like swimming is some will keep performing at a high level for years to come and some will fade away just as quick as they arrived .

Actually, everyone gets this, and it's not new. I was part of a school-record breaking 4x400 team in high school. We ran it on a state-of-the-art college track. The old record from the 1970s had been run on dirt. I'm sure we were at least a second-per-lap faster just because of the surface, without even accounting for our better spikes. We also lifted weights, did plyos, and took creatine. We got to start training on indoor tracks a month before the snow melted, whereas the guys back in the 70s had nowhere they could run until April.

Sounds great. But, consider this: Ryun and Clarke had opportunities to race on both cinder and all-weather tracks but never ran faster than they did on cinder. After all-weather started showing up in the late 60s, it took another 5 years for the mile WR to finally be broken by .1 second. Took 6 years for the 5 and 10 to go down. Took less than a year after the introduction of super spikes for Bekele’s insane 5 and 10 records to go down by half the talent. You can throw the term “epo” around all you want, but we all know Bekele should be at the top of those lists. The two techs are not the same. You think we should still be running on cinder!?

Isolate them for 24 hours before competition, with an observer watching them all like a hawk, and cameras everywhere. Inspect their bags when they arrive there too. If they try to sneak a bicarb pill they are caught red handed

I will sometimes give bicarb when I restore flow to a leg that has been profoundly ischemic for several hours just to try to mediate the big acid shift that washes out of the leg. We don't pretend that it's in any way a long term fix.

Despite everything, some of these crazy times from teenagers lately still are hard for me to comprehend — they make me think something other than merely bicarb and supershoes are happening and I have to believe it has to do with training approaches (particularly from a younger age) and the change in mentality broadly speaking from trying to win races to people attacking fast times en masse

Weren't Ryun and Clarke both beyond their best years when they had a chance to run on all-weather tracks? That being said Ron Clarke did run a 27'49" 10000m when he was in his thirties in 1968 on an all weather track. However, in that race he was running basically by himself in the middle of a hurricane so that would have equated to a much faster time than his WR of 27'39" ran on cinders at Oslo in 1965.
