In college at Villanova, Dwyer was one of the top milers in the NCAA and likely would have been a multiple time NCAA indoor champ if NCAA indoors existed at the time (as he won the indoor IC4a champs 3 times in a row). He won the 1953 Wanamaker mile. He was twice top 5 in the US at the Olympic Trials.
Post-collegiately, he was the coach of Manhattan college for 24 years and guided them to the 1973 NCAA indoor championship. He coached Marty Liquori in HS and Matt Centrowitz in college.
